The Best of Metafilter - book? August 16, 2005 11:29 PM Subscribe
If you published a book and called it “The Best of Metafilter”, what threads would you include in it (besides the one about the best logo)?
The book would be one thread long and it would be this thread.
The book would sell poorly, which would only improve its reputation as a vital encapsulation of the post-post-structuralist urban hyper-experience amongst snobbish contrarians who, as we know, are the only readers worth attracting.

Words are meaningless.
..said the deconstructionist, before calling up his wife and asking her what we're having for dinner tonight.
Random facts about the upcoming MeFi book:
-Deletions are cumbersome and non-retroactive; however, you can easily delete a cluster of comments or an entire thread by simply ripping a page out.
-Publication was repeatedly delayed by a four-head team of editors working overtime to incorporate a love interest between a bunny with a pancake on its head and quonsar.
-In its Chinese translation, all threads pre-summer of 2005 are just a bunch of fucking squares.
-Yearlong feuds will break out in MeTa over which sections of the book are to be considered "canonical".
-"All posts are © their original authors and Tom Doherty Associates, LLC".
-The sidebar folds out.
-The links don't work.

If it's allowed to include AskMeFi then I vote the bear vs. knife wielding individual thread and very definitely not scarabic's corpse disposal answer for obvious reasons.

You do realize we've had the "best/favorite threads" discussion before, right? More than once?

For the record, I bet my right hand against quonsar's lies. Greatest. Thread. Ever.

Another pony idea, ahem, just for the purpose of pre-empting most such future threads: On a dedicated page, every member anonymously submits 10 (non-redundant) thread IDs of da Best of the Blue. A 30-day announced voting period. Tabulate the count and there's your list.

Second on Chunking Express! Nothing beats:
A real man would say, "Take a knife, quonsar, and face Minya to the death." If they would not say that, they could at least say, "We'll shock both of you with electiricity until quonsar admits his lies." I would accept either decision.
So classic.

Steven den Beste getting his waffling arse handed to him on a plate.
ColdChef & evanizer finally get it together.
This turned into a great discussion on language, freedom & racisim.
And any thread with lots of swearing, being funny or everyone picking on some dumb arse.
There's loads more but why the hell should I do your dirty work..?

I wish this thread would get deleted, but while it's here, let me thank i_cola for reminding me of that fascinating thread. I reread the whole thing and got just as worked up about people's readiness to approve of censorship as I was two years ago.

And a poison knife is cheating. If we allow cheating then just have the knife guy drop a 500 pound knife on the bear from a plane or something.
My favorite quote from that thread.

Or quote from. Or read. On the screen like you are doing you thief you thief you word stealing sons of bitches.
